Physiological and hygienic features of keeping dogs and cats in large cities

Summary. An overview on the potential risk factors that a pet may face living in an apartment is presented in the article. Based on the «rule of five freedoms», the owners' task is to ensure optimal living conditions, which will prevent the development of many diseases caused by stress, lack of macro- and microelements in the diet and violation of the daily routine. In addition, the owners are responsible for measures to protect pets from various pathogens, parasites, insects. The authors provide an overview of the research on the effects of commercial diets on pet health. The methods of prevention and correction of unfavorable environmental factors are described. The article analyzes in detail the theoretical data on everyday risk factors that pet owners may face in living conditions. As such, stress, improperly selected nutrition, violation of the daily routine, quality of sleep are considered. The importance of correct compliance with the requirements of animal hygiene, timely vaccination and treatment against ecto- and endoparasites is emphasized. The features of different classes of commercial animal feed, the reasons for their choice by the owners, and the possibility of their use depending on the state of animal health are analyzed separately.
