Spread of bovine parainfluenza-3 virus in ruminants

Dumova V.V., Mishchenko V.A, Kiselyov M.Yu., Mishchenko A.V., Chernykh O.Yu.

Summary

Results of the bovine sera testing are indicative of high prevalence of parainfluenza-3 virus antibodies. Four-fold increase in parainfluenza-3 virus antibody titers was established in the etiological study of respiratory pathology in newly calved high-producing cows and heifers and that enabled to diagnose the disease and develop the control strategy. It was established that respiratory diseases in cattle are caused by several agents.

Parainfluenza-3 virus antibodies were detected in sera from camels, sheep and goats as well as in sera from wild animals (deer, elks, roes, wapitis and dzerens). These data are indicative of interspecies transmission of parainfluenza-3 virus.

Possibility of milk whey and colostrum usage in screening and monitoring tests for parainfluenza-3 agent was established.

Key words: PI-3 virus, antibodies, cattle, sheep, goats, camels, wild ruminants, milk.
