Characteristic of staphylococcus aureus antimicrobial resistance on a dairy farm over a five-year period

Summary. The change of antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus spp. on a dairy farm had been studied for five years. Milk samples, swabs from the udder of cows, swabs from the mucous membranes of the oral and nasal cavities, from the skin and coat of cows and calves, swabs from the mucous membrane of the vagina of cows, bedding samples, swabs from contact surfaces, equipment, livestock care equipment, air samples in various technological areas of a dairy farm had been studied. The research was conducted in the period of 2017-2022. The generic and species composition of microorganisms was analyzed, and the phenotypic susceptibility of isolated staphylococcal strains to antibiotics was determined. It was found that S. aureus, S. xylosus, S. equorum, S. epidermidis, S. haemolyticus, and S. lentus were predominant among the representatives of the genus Staphylococcus. The study of antibiotic susceptibility revealed the tendency towards an increase in antibiotic resistance of detected Staphylococcus spp. In 2017 it was estimated that 85% of S. aureus strains were mostly susceptible to meropenem, ampicillin, amoxicillin, whereas in 2022 - no more than 20%. Furthermore, the tendency towards an increase of multidrug resistant strains, not susceptible to 3-5 antibiotic classes, was revealed. Susceptibility of S. aureus strains in 2022 compared to 2017 is significantly decreased to azithromycin and tobramycin. Acquired data indicates of staphylococcal population contamination with drug-resistance agents and their circulation in farm’s microbiocenoses.
